A man caught up in an armed police incident in Parklands says he was “pulled” from his home at gunpoint after someone mistook his late grandmother’s mobility aid for a firearm.

The man, who contacted chrislynchmedia.com, said no one was arrested in the incident near Putake Drive on Friday morning, despite the large armed police presence.

Several streets were cordoned off just after 10am, with multiple residents describing a significant armed police response.

Police earlier told chrislynchmedia.com “police were called about 9.20am to a report of a disturbance with a person allegedly presenting a firearm. No report of injuries, or confirmation of a firearm, but one man has been taken into custody.”

The man said the operation had been sparked by a false report. “Someone called police and said I was driving around with a gun in my car, but it was just the reacher of my [late] frail grandmother.” he said, referring to the long handled grabbing tool used as a mobility aid.

He said officers realised their mistake once they searched the vehicle. “No one was arrested. I was merely detained whilst the police sheepishly looked in the car and realised the huge error of their ways,” he said.

The man said the experience had been humiliating and deeply distressing. “It has the entire neighbourhood talking and gawking like we are some kind of criminals,” he said.

“It was incredibly traumatic to be pulled out of your house under gunpoint, already, without the further harm and shame.”

“I never received so much as an apology from them.”

His mother told chrislynchmedia.com she got a fright when she saw her the house surrounded by armed police, but saw the funny side.

“It was a pretty eventful morning that’s for sure, but rest assured we’re not criminals, and the area is safe.”
