Fire and Emergency Canterbury has issued a warning for builders and contractors in the greater Christchurch.

A spokesperson is urging workers to take extra care when using power tools in the open air.

“This is particularly important when grinding or cutting metals, especially if you are near any vegetation.”

The organisation said the request is particularly relevant during the hot temperatures forecast over the next few days.

Today’s high could reach 36°.

Metservice has forecast fine and hot weather with northeasterly turning gusty northwest around midday.

CDHB ISSUES HEALTH WARNING

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink said while we may welcome a run of hot weather, overheating is a condition that can prove fatal.

“It’s especially important to stay out of the sun where possible, avoid extreme physical exertion and ensure pets and people are not left alone in stationary cars.”

“While we are all vulnerable to hot temperatures, some people are particularly at risk. This includes the elderly, infants and children, women who are pregnant, people suffering from chronic, acute and severe illness.”

LOOKING AFTER YOUR PETS

Christchurch animal charity Bull Breed Rescue is reminding pet owners to keep their animals at home today.

It said make sure you have plenty of fresh water and shade available and make sure the water can’t heat up in the sun.

  • Go buy a cheapo paddling pool

  • – Stick an ice cream container of water in the freezer now!

  • – Pet cooling pads!
