The Selwyn District Council has announced a new 30-year licence term for residents at Upper Selwyn Huts, providing long-term stability for licence holders.

A formal review of the licence will take place at the 20-year mark to assess future renewal and consider any necessary changes.

This decision follows extensive consultation with the Upper Selwyn Huts community, which began in early 2024.

The process included targeted engagement from August to December of that year, along with five weeks of consultation held in June and July 2025 to gather feedback from residents.

Selwyn District Council Executive Director of Community Services and Facilities, Denise Kidd, explained that the changing nature of the Upper Selwyn Huts community had influenced the decision.

“While some huts and dwellings are still used on a temporary basis, others are now occupied as permanent residences. This shift has changed the nature of the community and their needs,” said Kidd. “Our recent decision provides a clearer licence term, moving away from annual and short-term rollovers, giving licence holders greater certainty and the ability to plan ahead.”

Under the new terms, residents will receive a 30-year licence, with a formal review scheduled at the 20-year mark to assess the possibility of extending the term. This review will include consultation with licence holders to gauge community sentiment and make any necessary adjustments.
Kidd emphasised that the new 30-year licence arrangement represents a significant step forward for the Upper Selwyn Huts community.

“This is a significant step forward for the Upper Selwyn Huts community,” Kidd said. “We are committed to working alongside residents to ensure the area remains safe, sustainable, and well-managed for years to come.”
