Fire crews are stepping up their battle against a fast moving scrub fire that’s threatening homes near Twizel in the Mackenzie District.
There are now 14 helicopters and two aircraft working to contain the blaze being fanned by strong winds.

Police are trying to evacuate those living in houses on State Highway 80.
A Mackenzie District Council spokesperson says they’ve been in touch with Fire and Emergency New Zealand who haven’t requested assistance at this stage.
“Our Emergency Operations Centre team are always on standby to help if required.”

A Fire and Emergency spokesman says the fire has jumped across Mt Cook Road to the east side.
He says the fight for one property has been abandoned, without providing details.

Multiple crews from Omarama, Otematata, Lake Tekapo, Burkes Pass and a command unit from Timaru are at the scene.
Fire crews from Christchurch are now en route to the fire.
