30 firefighters will continue to work on extinguishing the Pines Beach fire and deal with any hotspots today.

A Canterbury Fire and Emergency spokesperson said there are two helicopters on standby as temperatures and winds are set to increase throughout the day.

“There is some heavy machinery assisting with the extinguishing efforts.”

The Canterbury Fire and Emergency spokesperson said crews will be on-site for at least the next two days.

The fire is contained within an area and hasn’t grown in size overnight, so it is still within the 20ha reported yesterday.

At the peak of the fire, 18 crews and two helicopters were required to get the fire under control.

A police spokeswoman said 12 houses were evacuated, but all occupants were able to return to their homes last night.

There is no police presence there today.
