Fire fighters are at the scene of a fire at a front unit in upper Riccarton.

It is understood to be a Christchurch City Council flat.

The fire is near Yaldhurst Road just metres from Countown Church Corner carpark.

Multiple fire appliances are on the scene.

A St John Ambulance is also on site.

Police have blocked off nearby roads.

An eye witness says at least one person was rescued, but this hasn’t been confirmed.

Fire fighters are using at least one low pressure hose to attack the blaze from the roof.

Riccarton Road (west bound) has been blocked off by police near Yaldhust Road.
