The owners of an abandoned two-story Christchurch central city house have been issued with an official “dangerous” notice warning from The Christchurch City Council.

The villa at 226 Worcester Street was abandoned after the 2011 quake.

It has become a magnet for petty crime and the fire service has been called to the property at least three times.

A council notice stuck on the outside of the front fence said “the building was insanitary and in a state of disrepair with putrescent refuse and human waste scattered throughout the property.”

Chris Lynch visited the house in August following complaints from neighbours, and discovered drug utensils, old mattresses, empty beer bottles, soiled clothes, and a person sleeping on the ground floor.

At the time a council manager said they had received one complaint but wouldn’t discuss the matter further as it was “under investigation.”

Chris Lynch asked the council for an update on the property on his morning radio show today on Newstalk ZB, but the authority was unable to provide an immediate response.

Lynch visited the house this afternoon and saw the council notice pinned to the fence of the house.

It was addressed to Caroline Smith Taylor, Graham Watson Taylor and Morag Jean Smith Taylor.

The notice was issued under the Building Act and along with the insanitary notice, it said the “council is satisfied the east chimney structure situated at 226 Worcester Street, Central City is dangerous.”

It said “the east chimney structure remains unsafe and some of the loose bricks may become unstable and could fall during heavy rain, strong winds or ground vibration from heavy vehicles passing near the building.”

“The loose bricks on the east chimney could fall onto the driveway and could hit vehicles and pedestrians.”

The owners had until 27th November to “safely demolish the east chimney structure.

It’s underclear if any work has been done to the building due to overgrown vegetation obscuring a clear view of the house.
