Opening hours at Christchurch libraries could be reduced if a proposed council cost-saving measure goes ahead.

The proposal includes opening Tūranga on “some public holidays” but closing on weekdays at an hour earlier at 7pm.

Council also wants to close Aranui and Sumner Centre library on Sundays “to align with other small libraries.”

All larger libraries will be open until 6pm on weekdays.

The plan discontinues the weekly Mobile Library from July 2022, to coincide with the retirement of the mobile van.

Council is also proposing to close two of the service desks it operates “because more residents are using online or phone services.”

Service desks at Akaroa and Lyttelton will be closed down.

The Christchurch Art Gallery weekly Wednesday late night would reduce to one late Wednesday a month.

It is also proposing a 25 per cent reduction in the programmes the gallery offers to the public and school groups.

The Riccarton Road Bus Lounges would close, saving $600,000 a year.

Public consultation on the Draft 2021-31 Long Term Plan will begin on Friday 12 March and run until Sunday 18 April.
