The company that operates Christchurch’s bus service says the driver who was bashed in Linwood on Saturday is getting ‘appropriate support.’

A driver suffered minor injuries after being assaulted at the bus stop on Buckleys Road, opposite Eastgate mall.

Buckleys Road, where the alleged attack took place.

An eye witness said she saw the driver being dragged off the bus and beaten. An elderly man was also pushed to the ground by the offender.

An Environment Canterbury spokesperson said the incident was being dealt with by the operator (Metro Bus) who has provided the driver with appropriate support.

She said “contracted operators have their own safety procedures in place and on-bus features (including radio assistance and CCTV footage.)

“Comprehensive safety and de-escalation training is also provided to all staff by the operator.”

“For privacy reasons, it is not appropriate for us to comment on driver status and as the incident has an active police investigation underway, we are unable to comment further. “

A police spokeswoman said police are following up and working to determine the circumstances surrounding the matter.
