One person has died following a crash involving a car and a cyclist in Addington, Christchurch last night.

A police spokesperson said emergency services were alerted to the crash on Brougham Street at around 7:50pm.

The cyclist was taken to hospital in a critical condition where they later died.

State Highway 76 was closed overnight to eastbound traffic from the Barrington St off-ramp and traffic was diverted into Selwyn Street.

Police say an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
