A man has died after being caught in an avalanche on Mount Dixon in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park this morning.

Emergency services were called just after 10am, and a Search and Rescue response was activated, Senior Sergeant Craig Ellison said.

Mount Dixon is a 3004 metre peak in the Southern Alps, sitting above the Tasman Glacier near the Grand Plateau, and is popular with climbers heading into the Aoraki Mount Cook area.

The man was found unresponsive a short time after the search began.

“Despite best efforts by those at the scene, the man was pronounced deceased a short time after being found,” Ellison said.

His body has been recovered, and the death has been referred to the Coroner.
