South Canterbury Rugby says a complaint involving allegations of a racial nature against children aged 12 and 13 has been withdrawn following an investigation.
The South Canterbury Rugby Football Union said the allegations were made publicly following a JAB rugby match and were also lodged with the union as a formal complaint.
The union said it carried out a thorough investigation involving all relevant parties.
“Following the investigation, the complainant indicated he did not wish to proceed with the allegations and withdrew the complaint,” the union said.
South Canterbury Rugby said public allegations of this nature could have a significant impact on young people, their families and the reputation of the club or school involved.
It urged people with concerns about behaviour in junior rugby to use the appropriate Rugby Union complaints process, allowing allegations to be investigated before conclusions were reached or claims shared publicly.
“Public commentary while complaints are under investigation is unhelpful and can cause unnecessary harm.”
The union also acknowledged the school involved and reaffirmed its standing as “a valued and respected member of our rugby community.”
“Rugby should be a safe and positive environment where children can learn, develop, and enjoy the game.”
South Canterbury Rugby said it now considered the matter closed.
