Two people have been seriously injured after a car struck a pole on Trices Road in Halswell early Sunday morning.

A police spokeswoman told chrislynchmedia.com emergency services were called to the single vehicle crash about 4.30am.

A St John spokesperson told chrislynchmedia.com two rapid response units, two ambulances and an operations manager were sent to the scene after being notified at 4.30am.

Ambulance staff treated two patients before transporting them to Christchurch Hospital.

One patient was in a critical condition and the other was in a serious condition.

Police enquiries are continuing.
