Multiple people have reported seeing a bright orange object moving across the Canterbury sky this evening.

Melody Love saw the object from West Eyreton.

“We noticed it just after 5 and it looked like an electric orange streak in the sky,” she said.

Christchurch resident Robert Wells reported seeing what he described as an “awesome shooting star” moving towards the Port Hills.

“It was really low,” he told chrislynchmedia.com.

Jess Mullis photographed the object near Christchurch Airport about 5.50pm as it appeared to head towards the Southern Alps.

Mullis said the photographs were captured using the 40 times zoom on her phone and appeared to show two dark points surrounded by glowing orange trails.

“I have never seen anything like it before, and I work at the airport,” she said.

Christchurch resident Trish Hughes said “I was sitting on my porch when I saw it fall from the sky, looked like it landed in Cashmere area somewhere.

“It had a bright green tail and orange ball, couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

The sightings have not yet been officially identified or confirmed as a meteor.
