Police are investigating the unexplained death of a woman at a Christchurch motel overnight.

Emergency services were called to the Colombo Street motel about 3.20am after reports of an unresponsive woman.

Despite efforts to help her, she was unable to be revived.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dan Overend said a scene examination was under way today and was expected to take some time to complete.

Police would have a visible presence in the area while the examination continued.

“Enquiries are in their very early stages and we will share any updates when they become available,” Overend said.
