A woman who lives near where a baby received “serious unexplained injuries” said she heard the child crying every day and felt something was not right.
Christchurch police are investigating after a baby was taken to hospital with serious injuries in circumstances that remain “unexplained.”
The child was admitted to hospital on Monday and officers are working to establish how the injuries occurred.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnson said “officers are undertaking enquiries to establish how the infant came to be injured, including speaking with family members.”
He said residents in the Barbadoes Street area may notice a police presence in the coming days as officers carry out further enquiries.
A nearby resident told chrislynchmedia.com, “It’s been horrible hearing that baby crying every day. I felt something wasn’t right, but I didn’t know what I could do.”
She said, “Every time the child was crying, the curtains would be closed so I couldn’t see what was happening.”
The woman also said she had seen the adults at the property a couple of times and their behaviour “did not seem normal.”
No arrests have been announced and the investigation is ongoing.
