An estimated 200 to 300 litres of lubricating oil has entered Akaroa Harbour after an incident involving a Royal New Zealand Navy vessel.
Environment Canterbury confirmed it was notified by the New Zealand Defence Force about the spill from HMNZS Te Kaha while the ship was anchored in the harbour.
A spokesperson said the regional council was working alongside the Defence Force to monitor the situation and support clean up efforts.
The spokesperson said the spill involved lubricating oil and early estimates suggested between 200 and 300 litres had entered the water.
Authorities have urged people to avoid the affected area if they see or smell oil.
Environment Canterbury Chair Deon Swiggs told chrislynchmedia.com “our harbourmaster staff are actively working with the navy crew to contain and mop up the spill.”
Anyone who notices signs of pollution or has concerns has been asked to contact Environment Canterbury’s pollution hotline on 0800 765 588.
