A fed up central Christchurch resident has spoken out over an abandoned Worcester Street section, saying the site has blighted the neighbourhood for more than 15 years and is again attracting dumping and makeshift shelters.

Before it was cleared, a derelict house stood on the property for years, deteriorating until it was destroyed in an arson fire.

The structure was later demolished, and many on the street hoped site would be sold and redeveloped.

Instead, the section has remained vacant.

“Sadly the section remains an eyesore,” the resident said. “Rubbish is being dumped there and the section now contains makeshift accommodation where once again homeless people have taken shelter.”

The resident also alleged drug activity at the site and said police were frequent visitors, but claimed little appeared to change.

“It has been 15 years since the earthquake and 15 years this property has been an issue,” the resident said.

“It is obvious the owners have abandoned the section and the council needs to step in.”

The resident said the surrounding area had seen significant regeneration, including the growth of short-term visitor accommodation nearby, making the condition of the site even more noticeable.

“This area now has a lot of Airbnbs near this section and it is embarrassing to have this shown to people not from this area,” the resident said.

“Something needs to be done.”

They said the section should either be securely fenced to prevent further access or sold to a developer willing to build on it.

Christchurch City Council Head of Regulatory Compliance Tracey Weston said in a statement “we’re aware of the issues at 226 Worcester Street and are working with other Government agencies.

A further update will be provided as more information becomes available” Weston said.

Chris Lynch Media has approached the owner of the section for comment.
