Philippines Day brought colour, culture, and traditional food to Ray Blank Park in Ilam, creating a relaxed community celebration across the afternoon.

The annual event attracted families and visitors to celebrate Filipino heritage through music, dance, and cuisine. 

Philippine Culture and Migrants Services Manager Delia Richards said the event was both a celebration of culture and a chance to thank Christchurch for its support.

Richards said the event carried deeper meaning for many migrants, providing an opportunity to reflect on belonging and opportunity.

“We would like to say thank you back to the city for making us give all these opportunities to have a better life today,” she said.

Throughout the day, crowds gathered around the stage for cultural performances and displays celebrating traditions from across the Philippines, while food stalls and community activities added to the festive atmosphere.

Richards said the welcoming nature of Christchurch helped many Filipino migrants feel settled and connected.

“It’s so unique and it’s so welcoming especially in Christchurch and that’s why I would say the migrants feel at home here, a home away from home,” she said.

Organisers said the event continued to grow each year, strengthening cultural connections and celebrating the contribution of the Filipino community across Canterbury.
