Christchurch is set to host the Weet Bix Kids TRYathlon, with hundreds of young participants expected to take part at Halswell Domain and Pool.

The event will start at 7.00am on Sunday 22 February and is part of the nationwide Weet Bix Kids TRYathlon series, now in its 33rd season, running from November to March.

All Blacks player Ardie Savea has been serving as ambassador for the series, encouraging children to get active and give new challenges a go.

“Being active and trying new things is so important for our young ones,” Savea said. “They’re giving it their best try, and that’s what it’s all about. I know what it feels like to step out of your comfort zone, and it’s awesome to see kids showing up, having fun, and pushing themselves.”

Since beginning in 1992, the TRYathlon has seen more than half a million New Zealand children take part, with many experiencing organised sport for the first time.

The event focuses on participation and confidence, with children encouraged to swim, cycle and run at their own pace.

Sanitarium NZ General Manager Michael Barton said the event has continued to resonate with families and communities for more than three decades.

“For 33 years, the Weet Bix Kids TRYathlon has inspired generations to get moving, make friends, and build confidence. It’s about more than sport – it’s about courage, community and giving things a go. As Weet Bix celebrates 95 years in New Zealand, it’s incredible to see that same spirit of strength and positivity alive and well in our tamariki,” Barton said.

Savea said the focus of the event was on effort rather than results.

“You don’t have to be the fastest or the fittest – you just need to show up, have fun, and give it your best TRY. That’s what makes this event so special,” he said.

The TRYathlon has been open to children aged 6 to 15 and has catered to all fitness levels. Through the Weet Bix Kids TRYathlon Foundation, around 3,000 children each year have been supported to take part, including those who might not otherwise be able to participate.
