Police have named the man who died following a water related incident on Saturday in Akaroa.

He was 43 year old Chen You, from Halswell.

A police spokesperson said Chen had been diving to collect seafood when he went out of sight for about 1 hour.

Police were later notified that a person had been pulled from the water by the Harbourmaster.

Despite efforts to revive him, he died at the scene.

Police said their thoughts were with Chen’s family and friends at this difficult time.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
