BREAKING: ‘Major emergency’ response taking place at a Christchurch kindergarten

Several children have been injured, including one seriously, at a Christchurch kindergarten.

St John has confirmed to chrislynchmedia.com it was notified at 1.13pm of an incident on Ferry Road in Woolston, Christchurch.

Fourteen emergency vehicles have responded to the scene, including multiple ambulances, rapid response units and operations managers.

Children suffered chemical burns from a substance poured down a slide.

A St John spokeswoman said “Our crews are treating multiple patients, one of whom has been transported to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition.”

Chris Lynch Media understands the injuries are from chemical burns.

One four year old girl has been transported to Christchurch Hospital with serious burns to her legs and buttocks after a chemical liquid spill.

Police are also at the scene, but Fire and Emergency is the lead agency managing the situation.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Lynn Crossan told chrislynchmedia.com that units from Woolston and Christchurch City have been called to the scene, along with a Hazmat unit.

Ministry of Education spokeswoman Andrea Williams said “we are in close contact with the early learning service and are offering our support.

We will continue to work alongside them regarding the incident and take any necessary steps to ensure the wellbeing of children and staff.”
