A Christchurch teenager has been named the New Zealand Defence Force’s Cadet of the Year for 2025, recognised for exceptional leadership, discipline and service to his community.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Bradan Foster, from Governor’s Bay, serves with No. 18 Avon Squadron Air Training Corps in Christchurch.

The seventeen year old said the award was an unexpected honour and reflected the standards he aims to uphold in the Cadet Forces and in his future aviation career.

The annual Cadet of the Year Award recognises the cadet who best represents the core values of the New Zealand Cadet Forces, which mirror those of the New Zealand Defence Force. His citation describes outstanding leadership, selfless service and a consistent commitment to courage, commitment, comradeship and integrity.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Foster joined the Cadet Forces in 2021 and has since stepped into high pressure leadership positions, taken part in ceremonial duties, and led junior members through fieldcraft training and day to day squadron activities.

His citation says his integrity underpins his character, noting his strong self discipline, professionalism, and willingness to take responsibility. It also describes his ability to strengthen teamwork through an inclusive approach that supports those around him.

The Cashmere High School Year 13 student joined the Air Training Corps because he hoped to become a pilot.

He said Cadet Forces had taught him to adapt under pressure, communicate with confidence, stay disciplined and build strong relationships.

“It has given me a network of friends across the country and the chance to give back to the community and help those who come after you,” he said.

Alongside squadron commitments, including the annual guard at the Leeston cenotaph on Anzac Day, Cadet Flight Sergeant Foster volunteers as a Vice Patrol Captain and Search and Rescue trainee for Surf Life Saving New Zealand. He also mentors younger flyers through Youth Glide New Zealand and the Omarama Gliding Club.

He recently received the Hiwa i te Rangi Award at the Matariki Taonga Awards hosted by the Lyttelton Harbour Business Association.

He said he encourages young people to consider joining the Cadet Forces.

“It gives you so many skills you need today, from public speaking to working with different people. And the activities are incredible, from firearms training to bushcraft and flying courses,” he said.

“But the best part is the people. Nothing works without them. The volunteers and the cadets are at the heart of it.”
