Police have urged Canterbury residents to stay home and avoid non-essential travel as severe winds are forecast to batter the region on Thursday, with a state of local emergency declared.

Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill said conditions were expected to worsen, with widespread disruption likely.

“Consider if you really need to leave home,” Hill said. “You may need to adjust any travel plans you have made. Roads and highways are already impacted, and some may be closed.”

Hill said those who must travel should drive carefully and to the conditions.

“High winds could damage trees, powerlines and insecure roofs, and make driving hazardous for all drivers, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists,” he said.

Police are also warning against lighting any outdoor fires, with a total fire ban in place until Sunday.

“A fire in high winds will spread very quickly. Police will be investigating any suspicious fires and may prosecute those responsible,” Hill said.

He confirmed police staff were out in force across Canterbury to help keep people safe during the emergency.

“If you need help urgently, call 111,” Hill said.

MetService has issued a Strong Wind Warning – Red for Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains, in effect for seven hours from 9AM to 4pm on Thursday, 23 October.

Forecasters predict severe gale northwesterlies with damaging gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour in exposed places.

MetService said there was a threat to life from flying debris and falling trees. Destructive winds could cause widespread damage to powerlines and roofs, create dangerous driving conditions, and lead to significant disruption to transport and power supply.

Residents are advised to stay indoors or seek sturdy shelter away from trees, avoid travel, and be prepared for potential power and communication outages.
