An Orange Strong Wind Warning has been issued for the Canterbury High Country this afternoon, with severe northwest gales expected to affect the region.

The warning is in place for eight hours from 4pm today, Monday 6 October, until midnight. Winds could reach severe gale strength, gusting up to 120 kilometres an hour in exposed areas.

Forecasters said there was only a minimal chance of the alert being upgraded to a Red Warning.

Strong winds may cause damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures, and driving could be difficult, particularly for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and drive cautiously.

Road Snowfall Warnings are also in place for Arthur’s Pass and Lewis Pass tomorrow morning.
