Police have arrested a 44 year old man in connection with the theft of a major bronze sculpture from the Mt Pleasant Community Centre.

The man is due to appear in Christchurch District Court on 16 September charged with theft.

Acting Detective Sergeant Steph Trengrove said the loss of the artwork had left the community distressed. “The theft of the sculpture has deeply upset the community, and Police have worked hard to locate the artwork and identify the person responsible.”

The sculpture, titled Flight, was created by Christchurch sculptor Llew Summers in 2018 and valued at $95,000. Weighing 2.2 tonnes and measuring 2.2 metres in length, it depicted a large bird in flight, inspired by the nearby estuary. It was the final major bronze work completed by Summers before his death in 2019.

Police said they became aware of the theft on 6 June 2025. Their investigation indicated the sculpture had been destroyed, with much of it sold as scrap metal. Only small fragments have been recovered.

“While we are pleased to have apprehended the offender, Police acknowledge the devastation the residents feel in losing such significant artwork,” Trengrove said.

She thanked community members, including those in the scrap metal industry, who helped officers with information and support throughout the investigation.

Police are urging anyone who sees unlawful or suspicious activity to call 111 immediately. Non emergency matters can be reported online at 105.police.govt.nz or by calling 105.
