A woman has died and a man remains in a critical condition after being shot by police in Christchurch overnight.
Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill said officers were called to a home on Clyde Road in Bryndwr about 11pm after receiving a report of a man armed with a knife and threatening to harm himself and his partner.
When police arrived, a woman ran from the house followed by a man holding a knife. Believing she was in immediate danger, officers shot the man, critically injuring him.

The woman then picked up the knife and threatened police.
Despite officers urging her to drop the weapon, she moved toward them and was shot. She was given immediate medical treatment but died a short time later.
The man was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
Scene guards are in place and Clyde Road will remain partially closed.
Superintendent Hill said police have spoken with the victims’ next of kin and their thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.
He said the incident was distressing for the attending officers, who are being offered support.
A critical incident investigation has been launched and the matter will be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority, as is standard for any police shooting.
