Police are treating a fire at the old Hokitika Seaview hospital complex as suspicious.

The blaze broke out early on Sunday 10 August and was discovered at daybreak.

Detective Sergeant Graham Parsons of the West Coast said the scene examination took most of Sunday and part of Monday, with both police and fire investigators involved.

“Based on the scene examination the fire is being investigated as an arson,” Parsons said.

Police want to speak to a person seen walking across the grounds of the complex at about 3.20am.

They are appealing for anyone who was in the Seaview area on the night of the fire, or in the hours beforehand, to come forward.

“Police will continue to investigate and would like to hear from any people who may have information that may assist with identifying who was involved in the arson,” Parsons said.

Information can be provided online at 105, using reference number 250810/4743, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
