Three people have been injured after a car crashed into a traffic light pole at a busy Christchurch intersection on Friday evening.

A police spokesman said they were notified at around 6.35pm that a vehicle had collided with a traffic light pole at the intersection of Yaldhurst Road and Masham Road in Russley.

The impact knocked over the pole, but police said the remaining lights at the intersection were reported to be working.

The police spokesman said three people suffered serious injuries.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said the crash forced the closure of State Highway 73 Yaldhurst Road to westbound traffic at the intersection with State Highway 1. Eastbound lanes remain open.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area or delay travel if possible. Drivers are advised to follow the directions of emergency services at the scene for detour routes.
