Riccarton House and Bush has deep roots in Christchurch’s colonial history.
The homestead was originally built in 1856 for the pioneering Deans family, among the first European settlers in the Canterbury region.
The house, constructed in three stages between 1856 and 1900, reflects both Victorian and Edwardian architectural styles.

It was the home of Jane Deans, who played a key role in preserving the legacy of her late husband John Deans and the surrounding native bush.
Today, the site stands as a rare example of early European settlement, surrounded by the last remaining remnant of lowland kahikatea forest in Christchurch, known as Riccarton Bush.
