The Halswell Theatre Group is bringing something new to the stage with Ghost Light, a vibrant variety show built entirely around the passion and creativity of its performers.

Choreographer Sally Hayward said Ghost Light is more than just a showcase. “It’s a show that has been built around the people who are actually putting it together,” she said. “It celebrates the individuals on stage and behind the scenes who make theatre possible.”

The name takes inspiration from the single bulb traditionally left burning on stage when a theatre is dark or empty. It represents hope and continuity. The idea became even more meaningful during the COVID lockdowns when stages around the world fell silent, but the ghost light stayed on as a symbol that theatre would return.

“It is a powerful image,” Hayward said. “Even when there is no audience, the ghost light reminds us that theatre is still alive. That feeling inspired this entire show.”

Treasurer Byron Hill said the production gave the group a rare opportunity to perform pieces that have always been just out of reach.

“It’s a chance for us to explain why we love theatre,” Hill said. “It’s also a chance to finally perform all those songs, dances and numbers we’ve never quite had the opportunity to do in other shows. So we’ve compiled them into one big celebration.”

The cast was asked to reflect on what they love about community theatre, and to audition with a song or dance that captured that feeling. Their ideas were used to shape the show itself.

The result is a 23-song production brought to life by 19 cast members, each with their own story to tell and reason to perform.

“This show is a real celebration of community theatre,” Hill said. “The cast love what they do, and that passion shines through every number.”
