Structural engineer Zoran Rakovic has been announced as ACT Local’s candidate for the Springs Ward of the Selwyn District Council in this year’s local body elections.

Rakovic, a long-time Selwyn resident, has lived in New Zealand since 1995 after emigrating from Serbia. He has worked in the engineering sector for three decades and currently serves as a principal structural engineer.

He is also a father of four and grandfather of three.

In standing for local office, Rakovic says he aims to bring a practical, no-nonsense approach to council operations, drawing on his experience in managing complex engineering projects. He has expressed a focus on what he terms “disciplined spending,” greater public accountability, and opposing what he views as divisive or ideological agendas.

“I believe council should run like a well-managed building site: clear plans, disciplined spending, no surprises,” said Rakovic in a campaign statement. “I’ll focus on keeping rates fair, cutting waste, and making sure everyone has a say.”

His candidacy is part of ACT New Zealand’s new push into local government. The party launched its “ACT Local” initiative earlier this year, promoting what it calls “Common Sense Candidates” to address concerns over rising council rates and spending priorities.

ACT Local Government spokesperson Cameron Luxton described the campaign as a response to growing dissatisfaction with council performance.

“ACT Local candidates are community-minded Kiwis who’ve had enough of wasteful councils treating ratepayers like ATMs,” Luxton said. “They’re here to serve, not lecture.”

The Selwyn District Council election will be held later this year. Springs Ward is one of the key electoral areas within the district.
