A Christchurch City Council survey has revealed hundreds of residents feel unsafe using two Hornby intersections, with many calling the Amyes and Awatea junctions with Springs Road dangerous and confusing.

The Council received feedback from 394 individuals and six organisations, as part of its consultation on road safety concerns in the area.

Most people said turning right from either Amyes or Awatea Roads was difficult and risky, and many reported dangerous driver behaviour, poor visibility, and confusion over who has the right of way.

At the Amyes Road intersection, 165 people singled out the difficulty of turning right as their top concern. Another 113 people said visibility was an issue due to the dip in the road. Congestion and long wait times were also blamed for encouraging risky decisions, such as pulling out in front of oncoming traffic. Pedestrian and cyclist safety was also raised.

Similar issues were raised for the Awatea intersection. Again, 165 people said right-hand turns were unsafe, with a further 76 pointing to high traffic volumes and 68 saying delays led to poor driver behaviour.

Some residents said they avoided the intersections entirely or changed their travel routes to feel safer.

The Council said it had already developed traffic light schemes to improve safety, but these are currently too expensive to deliver because of the kerb and underground infrastructure work involved.

Council staff briefed the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board on the feedback on 26 June. While there is no funding currently available for the full upgrade, the Board has asked staff to explore cheaper alternatives for installing traffic lights without major underground changes.
