Christchurch Hospital’s Emergency Department has experienced a significant surge in demand today, prompting a call for the public to consider alternative care options if their condition is not life-threatening.
Health New Zealand said large numbers of people have been arriving at the hospital seeking medical attention, putting pressure on staff and resources.
“If you or a loved one are severely unwell, we absolutely want to see you in the ED, or call 111 for an ambulance,” the agency said.
“However, if it’s not a life-threatening emergency, we ask people to seek other avenues of care to reduce the pressure on our teams.”
Those unsure of the severity of their symptoms are encouraged to contact Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free health advice 24 hours a day. Health New Zealand said most viral illnesses can be managed safely at home with rest, fluids, and paracetamol.
Several alternative care options are available today including the 24 Hour Surgery, Riccarton Clinic, and a number of local pharmacies. Up-to-date information on open providers is available via Healthpoint.
Patients who still choose to attend the Emergency Department should expect long wait times unless their condition is urgent.
All patients are triaged on arrival, meaning those with non-urgent conditions will face delays while more serious cases are prioritised.
“If you are experiencing a medical emergency, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, or sudden loss of consciousness, call 111 immediately,” Health New Zealand said.
For those in rural areas, including Ashburton, the Ka Ora telehealth service offers same-day virtual appointments with clinicians. The number for Ka Ora is 0800 252 672. Standard fees may apply.
