The Richmond community will come together to mark Matariki with a free public celebration in the Red Zone on Saturday 21 June.

Running from 2:30PM to 6:30PM, Matariki in the Zone is described as a family-friendly afternoon of kai, culture and community, with this year’s theme “Powered by the Community” recognising the strong local support behind the annual event.

The celebration is being organised by Avon Ōtākaro Network alongside Richmond Community Garden, Avebury House, We are Richmond, and a number of local schools, creatives, and community groups.

Organiser Hayley Guglietta said the Matariki season was a time for remembrance, celebration and looking ahead.

“This event is our way of honouring that kaupapa, while shining a light on the incredible talent and energy within our community,” she said.

The programme will feature live music, kapa haka, storytelling and cultural activities for tamariki, as well as a shared hāngī and boil-up, with koha appreciated.

A lantern-lit procession is planned at dusk, followed by fire spinning once darkness falls.

The event is zero-waste, alcohol-free, and open to all ages. Organisers are encouraging people to bring warm clothing, friends and whānau to enjoy the celebration together.

Matariki in the Zone – Powered by the Community, happening Saturday 21 June 2025, 2:30–7pm at Riverlution and Avebury Park in Richmond.
