Christchurch is set to play a key role in this year’s New Zealand Beer Awards, with judging for the country’s top brewing competition taking place at Riccarton Park in July.

The awards, managed by the Brewers Guild of New Zealand, celebrate excellence across the brewing industry and are open to commercial brewers of all sizes in New Zealand and Australia.

Now in its 19th year, the event recognises standout beers and breweries across a range of categories, including the coveted titles of Champion New Zealand Beer and Champion New Zealand Brewing Company.

Guild Executive Director Melanie Kees said the competition continues to grow and evolve, with the 2025 edition welcoming entries from across the Tasman.

“We are really looking forward to this year’s competition and to celebrating quality beer,” she said. “We’re also excited to introduce a new trophy, Champion Australian Brewery.”

Last year more than 70 breweries submitted over 700 entries. Organisers expect a similar level of interest this year.

Judging will involve nearly 60 volunteers supporting a panel of experts at the Christchurch venue. Winners will be announced at the New Zealand Beer Awards Gala Dinner, which will also be held in Christchurch on August 2.
