Vivid Sydney is the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s celebrating its eleventh anniversary and it just seems to get bigger and better. It’s owned, managed and produced by Destination NSW, the NSW government’s tourism and major events agency and they certainly know how to put on a show.

Vivid Sydney transforms the city into a colourful creative canvas from the 24 May to 15 June. It features spectacular large-scale light installations and projections; contemporary and cutting-edge music performances and collaborations; public talks, industry seminars, conferences and creativity workshops.

As shown in the video, my absolute favourite attraction is the famous light walk, which incorporates 50 installations by 100 artists and collaborators. The route stretches for more than three kilometres and includes major projections and installations on the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Customs House and The Rocks.

The southern pylon of the bridge features projections curated by Rhoda Roberts with work from the Art Gallery of NSW, the Australian Museum and the State Library of NSW. Customs House becomes an aquatic wonderland, while 32,000 Light beams turns the bridge and CBD skyline into a jewel to outshine any regal tiara.

What I love about this festival is that it’s appropriate for all ages, whether you want to go on a romantic date, or take the whole family, the organisers have done an outstanding job making sure the attractions and precincts are appropriate for everyone.

For the first time, Pixar Animation Studios has got involved, transforming Sydney’s iconic Argyle Cut in The Rocks, into a creative light projection with a visual feast of behind-the-scenes artwork and the evolution of iconic animation.
