A man has died after being run over at a Christchurch mall carpark.

Police were called to the Bush Inn Centre at 2.40pm.

Superintendent Lane Todd told Chris Lynch a 57-year-employee was cleaning out guttering, just outside the carpark building.

He said a customer of the building was leaving in an SUV, and as the driver was driving out, they didn’t see the man and ran him over. He passed away at the scene.

A police investigation team remains at the mall tonight.

He said Work Safe has been notified and police were still in the process of informing the man’s family.

He said it’s too early to say if charges would be laid.

“Police have a lot of investigation to do yet and driver of the vehicle has taken this very very badly so police are supporting the person.”

Work Safe said they were notified of the incident and will be investigating.
