Fire and Emergency Canterbury is urging the public not to light fireworks during windy conditions.
A spokesperson said the weather across Canterbury tonight is looking very messy with the winds changing from Northerly to a Southerly later.
“The winds are still rather gusty in many areas and people need to be extremely careful and vigilant if they are going to be setting off fireworks.”
Do not light Fireworks in windy or dry conditions and carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before using any fireworks.
The spokesperson said light fireworks in a wide-open area, away from anything that could catch fire, like dry grass, leaves or crops, or flammable gases or liquids.
Keep a bucket of water, hose or fire extinguisher handy.
Do not use fireworks after 10.30pm, and try to let your neighbours know in advance.
Keep your pets inside.
