Hayden Winter is now out of ICU

A Christchurch man allegedly seriously assaulted in Rolleston is out of the Intensive Care Unit, but is still in Christchurch Public Hospital.

26 year old Hayden Winter was knocked unconscious after he was allegedly punched by a man near a pub in Rolleston on Saturday, May 15.

His parents spoke to Chris Lynch tonight and said their son was making “good progress.”

Mum Colleen said Hayden was in the progressive care unit, and was “managing to walk around.”

Doctors took his breathing tube out last Thursday.

“He knows he’s in hospital and can talk, but has no insight into what happened or why he’s in hospital.”

Hayden was eating soft food, but was still confused and getting quite agitated.

His dad Shane said Hayden had come a long way in a very short time and he was remaining optimistic.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the ICU team. They’re absolutely tremendous.”

Hayden’s parents wanted to thank the community for their kind words and support.

After the incident, they released a photo of him in hospital to Chris Lynch Media and the Christchurch Press to show the “reality of his situation.”

A 25-year-old man has charged with assault with intent to injure, and is due to appear in court next week.
