A single lane of State Highway 1 has re-opened near Glasnevin, with traffic control in place to allow both north and southbound traffic to pass through the area where the fire has burned.

Fire and Emergency Incident Controller Des Irving extended his thanks to those who have been stuck either side of the road closure for their patience.

“We appreciate this has been caused disruption for people, but the safety of both the public and our crews is always the priority.

“We had power poles on fire near the road, an active fire and large amounts of smoke, but the road has now been made safe enough for one lane to open.

“Motorists should take extreme care when driving through the area – speed restrictions will be in place throughout the night.”

There will be multiple crews on the scene overnight, with more to come in tomorrow morning to complete mopup and extinguishment of the fire.

The size of the fire remains at five hectares.

Some residents who self-evacuated have been able to return to their homes, while the evacuation centre at the Waipara Hall remains open. The one at the Tin Hut in Amberley has closed due to it not being needed.
