A motel in Riccarton has been evacuated after Fire and Emergency received multiple calls of smoke coming from the building.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman told Chris Lynch crews from the Central Fire Station, Ilam, and Spreydon attended as well as a specialist aerial mobile unit.

Smoke could been seen from coming from one of the corner rooms facing Deans Avenue.

A handful of guests and staff evacuated the motel.

Police were called to the scene and Deans Ave has been blocked off at Moorhouse Ave.
