A New Brighton resident and her son are feeling grateful for the community support they have received after their house was completely gutted by fire.

Firefighters were called to Mountbatten Street just after 2pm on Wednesday.

Homeowner Kirsty and her 13-year-old son DJ had just been to the local service station when they arrived home to find their house on fire.

Heavily pregnant woman Mya Inglis managed to rescue the family’s dog from the backyard of the burning property.

The house was not insured Kirsty said.

Kirsty said she was “overwhelmed by the help and support of not just family and friends, but the whole community.

DJ and I can’t explain in words what it has meant to us.”

Kirsty said for now she just wanted some kind of normality back in DJ’s life.

“A lovely lady in New Brighton gifted DJ a whole school uniform, so I’m hoping he will be back to school on Monday.

We could not have made it this far without the support of everybody.”

It’s thought an electrical fault started the fire.

A Give a Little page has been set up to help the family.
