The mother of a teenage girl who attended the fatal party in Fendalton on Friday night says her daughter’s female friend was beaten up by a group of girls before three youths were stabbed, one fatally.
Police were called to reports of a stabbing at a residential property on Medbury Tce at 10.30pm on Friday.
When police arrived they found three males, aged 14, 16 and 17, with serious stab wounds.
16-year-old Zion Purukamu later died in Christchurch Public Hospital.
Police have not arrested anyone and it’s understood some people who attended the party are refusing to speak to authorities.
The mother of one of the party attendees said her daughter called the police just before the stabbings because her friend was “punched in the head and bottom and covered in bruises.”
The mother said her daughter phoned the police but was told no available staff were in the area as officers were attending other jobs.
She said her daughter and her friend called the police twice to report the assault before the stabbings occurred.
The mother said after they spoke to police they heard a lot of yelling and realised it was other party-goers yelling out to call an ambulance.
She said some of those who attended the party had gang connections ‘through family members.”
One of the first adults on the scene, who tried to administer first aid to two of the stabbed victims told Chris Lynch when she arrived on the scene, there were “two teenage girls having seizures.”
A police spokeswoman confirmed they received a report of an assault that had occurred at the Medbury Terrace party at 9.35pm.
She said the caller left the address and declined medical assistance.
The police spokeswoman said as the information provided indicated the caller was not in danger and was heading home, police advised her that officers would attend to speak to her when possible.
Officers attended her property at 11:47 pm and took a report of the assault.
She said officers were not dispatched to Medbury Terrace following the report due to the need to speak to the informant first.
This incident was unrelated to both the current homicide and associated serious assault investigations currently underway.
The mother of the teenager who phoned the police said she had no animosity towards the police. “I feel for the family and police.”
