“Crisis” drought conditions in top of the south

Agriculture Minister Todd McClay has announced the classification of drought conditions in the Marlborough, Tasman, and Nelson districts as a medium-scale adverse event, recognising the severe challenges facing the area's farmers and growers.

"Several regions within Marlborough, Tasman, and Nelson are currently experiencing an intense period of drought. The reality on the ground is exceptionally difficult for our farmers and growers, and I am fully aware of the hardships they are facing."

He added, "The Top of the South Drought Committee convened yesterday to deliberate on the crisis.

“Following an urgent briefing this from Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) personnel stationed in the affected regions, I have decided to declare the drought conditions in Marlborough, Tasan, and Nelson as a medium-scale adverse event.

"This declaration reflects the severe circumstances and will activate additional support measures for our agricultural community, including specific tax assistance.

In a recent visit to the Marlborough district, Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson witnessed the conditions firsthand.

"Building on the initial support of up to $20,000 provided last month to the Top of the South Rural Support Trust, today's declaration further underscores our commitment to aiding our farmers, growers, and rural communities during this challenging time.

“The early intervention was designed to ensure support was readily available.

"With forecasts indicating that the dry conditions may persist into the autumn, it's a tough period for our agricultural sector," McClay said.

"We are also closely monitoring dry conditions affecting other parts of the country and are ready to support those communities as needed."

Farmers and growers in need of assistance are encouraged to reach out to their local Rural Support Trust by calling 0800 787 254, ensuring they have access to the support and resources necessary during this challenging period.
