Environment Canterbury flood managers are monitoring the current heavy rainfall.
The agency said it is “reasonably confident that while there will be surface flooding in low areas, it doesn’t expect out-of-river flooding from this weather.”
Adjacent landowners are advised to monitor the rivers and consider shifting stock stock from vulnerable areas.
𝐊𝐚𝐢𝐤𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 | Surface flooding, particularly about the coast. Gravel movement and road ford closures likely along Postmans Rd from the Mt Fyffe Stream catchments. No significant issues are expected in Kowhai River or Lyell Creek.
𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐮𝐢 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 | Surface flooding. The increased river flows of foothills rivers including the Mason, Conway, Chatterton, Percival, Hanmer, Pahau and Kowai.
𝐖𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐫𝐢 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 | Surface flooding. Increased flows in Ashley/Rakahuri, Okuku and tributaries but not expected to threaten flood protection scheme. Eyre, Cust, Cam all expected to be carrying higher than normal but not peak flood flows.
𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐰𝐲𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 | Elevated flows in the Selwyn/Waikirikiri catchment including the Hawkins and Hororata. Watch for surface flooding around Springfield in particular.
𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 | Elevated flows but no out-of-river flows expected in the Ashburton and Hinds catchments. Likely damage to some of the recent repair sites.
𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐮 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 | Rainfall amounts of 50-70mm are expected for the foothills and plains. River catchments are already saturated and the forecast rain will result in rapid rise in river levels. The Orari and Waihi rivers are at greater risk to flooding as a result of damage caused by the May flood.
