Youth & Cultural Development celebrates 30 years

Christchurch’s Youth and Cultural Development has celebrated 30 years of service.

Founded in 1993 by Vic and Losa Tamati, YCD has been a hub for youth of Otautahi, Christchurch and is still operating to this day working out of their office in Cashel Street through the leadership of General Manager Fred Williams. 

YCD celebrated its birthday at Tūranga on Friday.

Acknowledgements also were made to previous manager Anni Watkin and her contribution to YCD over a number of years.

The organisation works closely with Oranga Tamariki, police and other youth agencies to create a safe space for youth offenders with daily programs catering to the needs of our young people.

They also run a number of Free youth events branded "FRESH" including Pool Parties at Te Pou Toe Toe Linwood Pool which has recently just won the National Aquatic Recreation Award.

Kaimahi Rangatahi Zenn Rarere attended the celebration and said he “felt the mana throughout the night.”

"For me celebrating achievements and highlighting our accomplishments as an organisation was a highlight. 

“Despite funding cuts, it’s pretty amazing to see YCD continue to grow.

"YCD prides itself on living up to their kaupapa. "Te Kaupapa o YCD ko te arahitia o nga rangatahi i roto to huarahitia o nga mana, nga ihi, nga wehi kia tae atu ki taua taumata" which translates to "YCD aims to navigate young people through the journey of self-discovery to develop their strengths and reach their full potential"
