Woman arrested at WINZ office in Hornby after making threat

A woman has been arrested after making threats at a WINZ office in Hornby.

The incident occurred at the Shands Road premises on Friday afternoon.

It’s understood staff and a client were forced to retreat to a back office after the offender made a threat.

A police spokesperson confirmed that officers were called to a Hornby address after a person made threats and said they had a gun.

Police took the woman into custody without incident and confirmed she did not in fact have a gun the spokesperson said.

Ministry of Social Development Regional Commissioner Blair McKenzie said MSD was made aware of a potential risk to its clients and staff.

“MSD's primary concern is the welfare of its people.

“We took the appropriate action to keep those clients and staff safe.

“MSD has a zero tolerance policy when there is a risk to its clients or staff in any site. Staff followed MSD protocols and informed the appropriate authorities.

“We want to acknowledge the quick and effective response of local police in this matter.

“The issue is being dealt with by police and as such MSD cannot comment on police matters.

 The site has been reopened.”

All Work and Income offices across New Zealand employ full time security personnel.
