In Christchurch, a city known for its canine enthusiasts, the name Bella is a standout among dog names, with 522 registered canines bearing the name in both Christchurch and the Banks Peninsula.

Marion and Ron brought home their own Bella, a lively five-year-old mix of heading and collie breeds, in April 2023.

Marion shared, "we'd been wanting a dog for quite a while, but wasn't sure how to go about it.

“Back in our day there were animals and livestock advertised at the back of the newspaper, but everything’s online now and we don’t know how to work it so we wondered how we could adopt a dog."

The couple eventually found their way to the local Animal Shelter in Christchurch, where they met Bella.

Marion recalled, "We wandered down the kennels and lots of the bigger dogs were barking, but Bella came straight to the gate, wagging her tail."

Describing Bella's characteristics, Marion added, "She loves kids and has an awesome nature. She’s always on bird patrol and runs up and down the section on the fence line to chase away the birds – she’s far too slow to catch any though."

Another Bella, a huntaway/golden retriever mix, found a home in May 2023 with Courtney and Jotham, residents of the area.

Despite considering a name change due to its popularity, the couple decided to keep the name Bella. Courtney shared her joy, saying, "we were so happy to be able to adopt her. She is the cuddliest dog and loves nothing more than hopping into bed with us in the morning or night."

In addition to Bella, other popular dog names in Christchurch include Charlie, Poppy, Molly, Max, Ruby, Luna, Daisy, Archie, and Rosie.

Dog owners in the region have also shown creativity in naming their pets, with inspirations ranging from famous All Blacks players to rock stars and fictional characters.

Among these unique names are Richie McPaw, Sonny Bill, Israel Dogg, Indiana Bones, Tommy Shelby, John Snow, Xena Princess Warrior, Obi Wan Kenobi, and music-inspired names like Billie Joel, Bon Jovi, Johnny Cash, Stevie Wonder, and Bob Marley.

As for dog breeds, Labrador Retrievers lead the pack, followed by Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Border Collies, Bichon Frises, and Jack Russell Terriers.
